We're trying to clean up low-quality questions here. Yet, some people who can vote to close (let alone flag questions for moderation) answer them. Why is this happening? Do they not understand what off-topic is? Or are they chasing reputation points?

Some examples of bad questions that have been around for a few days:

Perhaps they think this question is on topic? – Ross Jan 29 '12 at 8:42

@Ross: Except for times when the questions are clearly off-topic. – dnbrv Jan 29 '12 at 15:19

On the other hand I think the crowd here is unfairly harsh sometimes - this seems valid to me answers.onstartups.com/questions/35583/… and I could pick out a half dozen other examples pretty easily. – Ryan Feb 2 '12 at 8:53

@Ryan: That's not harsh. The question is bad because it's not concrete (the OP isn't asking for suggestions not a solution to a problem) and it's asking about the technical aspect not management. – dnbrv Feb 2 '12 at 13:15

I don't see where they are asking for technical aspects - "Should we expand on this and in what way?" – Ryan Feb 2 '12 at 13:53
@Ryan: But do you not object that it's a broad not constructive question? – dnbrv Feb 2 '12 at 14:05
I don't have a problem with it personally - seen much better but seen much worse too. In general I think the crowd here is a bit on the harsh side in IMHO - but thats what meta is for to get a feel of where the bar should be set. – Ryan Feb 2 '12 at 14:15
@Ryan I'm curious. Can you provide other examples of questions you think are appropriate, but have been closed or downvoted? – Zuly Gonzalez Feb 2 '12 at 20:12
Top of my head how about the last 2 of the 3 links posed by dnbrv above - but I'll have a dig around for a few more in the morning. – Ryan Feb 2 '12 at 23:23
@Zuly - some more for you. answers.onstartups.com/questions/35591/… answers.onstartups.com/questions/35606/… + also this discussion is relevant - meta.answers.onstartups.com/questions/227/… – Ryan Feb 3 '12 at 9:12
Guess it all comes down to the FAQ needs to be strengthened to clarify what is and what is not on topic here as everyone seems to have their own opinions. – Ryan Feb 3 '12 at 9:17

@Ryan I'm not seeing what you're seeing. None of the questions you provided as examples have been closed. There aren't even any downvotes on any of those questions. I'm on the opposite side of this, I tend to think we're too lenient at times, and let a lot of stuff go through that really should be closed if we were to follow the SE guidelines. – Zuly Gonzalez Feb 8 '12 at 21:33

@Ryan (cont.) I do agree with you that a lot of the differences in opinions are a result of the lack of clarity in our FAQ. The problem is that ideally we should be hashing things out on meta first. Then when a decision is made the FAQ should be modified to reflect that decision. However, there is so little activity on meta that it's hard to get a good discussion going and reach a consensus. – Zuly Gonzalez Feb 8 '12 at 21:33

Another one - answers.onstartups.com/questions/35864/… Yes I suppose you could argue that it should be "freight.stackexchange.com" but at that extreme there is pretty much nothing left in scope – Ryan Feb 9 '12 at 11:16
